Fujifilm X100VI Updates the TikTok-Famous Camera with Higher Resolution, In-Body Stabilization, and More

Say what you want about TikTok, but the short-form video app is an incredibly powerful marketing tool, turning erstwhile ordinary products like the Stanley Quencher into massive hits (so much so that even YETI is copying that water bottle’s exact design). Another recipient of the app’s viral sensation moment is Fujifilm’s X100V camera, which became so popular it ended up flying off retail shelves, with secondary market prices reaching ridiculous heights. If you’re still trying to get one of those cameras, maybe it’s time to shift your attention to its follow-up, the Fujifilm X100VI, instead.

That’s right, Fujifilm has decided to make the official successor to 2020’s X100V, delivering the same compact size, vintage styling, and exceptional imaging in a much-improved package. With a higher-res sensor, faster shooting speeds, in-body stabilization, and more upgrades, the sixth-generation of the “street photography camera” should make for an even more exciting option compared to its highly-coveted predecessor.

The Fujifilm X100VI is equipped with the same 40.2-megapixel sensor found in the much bigger X-H2 model, which, when combined with the wide-angle 3mm f/2.0 lens, provides greater cropping options and editing flexibility. It retains all the excellent shooting modes from the last-gen model, including “Film Simulation” that enables the wide range of color tones that resemble those found in photographs shot with traditional film. A total of 20 simulation modes can be chosen, each one tailored for best capturing different subjects and scenes.

Aside from enabling sharper high-res stills, the camera can also capture 6.2K video at 30 fps, 4K video at 60 fps, and full HD at 240 fps, making it an incredibly capable all-around camera. It even supports 10-bit F-log and F-Log2 recordings, which most people probably never expected from a small, photography-focused camera. Do note, they do stick with the UHS-1 SD card slot, which keeps the data rate pretty low at 200 Mbps, so you’ll probably want an external recorder if you’re doing ProRes video capture.

The Fujifilm X100VI also boasts an updated autofocus algorithm, which claims faster speeds and improved subject detection in a variety of lighting conditions. According to the outfit, it’s the first camera in the X100 series to use an AF algorithm that’s built using deep-learning AI. Another big update is the new five-axis in-body stabilization, which is quite a treat to have in a camera this small, enabling up to six stops of shake reduction to keep everything looking sharp even in low-light situations.

Other features include the same dual viewfinder setup as its predecessor (3.69-million dot optical viewfinder and 1.62-million dot LCD display), a battery rated for 300 shots, 11 fps shooting speed with the mechanical shutter, 20 fps shooting speed in electronic mode, and the outfit’s latest X-Processor 5. The body retains the same retro styling as other cameras in the line, along with the aluminum body that should hold up to the grind of busy urban streets and an equally light weight of just 521 grams, allowing it to comfortably slide into a jacket pocket.

The Fujifilm X100VI is now available for preorder, priced at $1,599.
