It was only two years ago that Canon released the EOS R50, a compact entry-level mirrorless camera that supported 4K video recording. Problem is, its 4K footage topped out at 30 fps, which made it a bit less attractive for content creators. As such, they’re updating it in the form of the Canon EOS R50 V.
Designed specifically with content creators in mind, the new vlogging camera boasts improved 4K video capabilities, a smaller body, and plenty of small details that make it much more suited to the content creator crowd. It’s also more affordably-priced on top of all that, making it a genuinely attractive option for the ever-growing crop of YouTubers, TikTokers, and everyone else who makes their own videos for posting online.
The Canon EOS R50 V houses the same 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor as the original R50. For this iteration, though, it supports 4K video recording at 60 fps, albeit with a crop, so it still tops out at 4K 30 fps if you want the full sensor width. It can also do 1080p up to 120 fps for all you slo-mo footage needs. More advanced users will definitely appreciate a number of features borrowed directly from the outfit’s Cinema EOS system, such as C-Log3 capture, HLG recording, and 10-bit 4:2:2 video. It also offers options for fast or slow shutters, depending on the type of action you’re recording.
There’s no in-body stabilization, so you might want to use a gimbal with this thing. It does, however, offer optical stabilization via supported lenses, along with electronic stabilization, with the option to combine both for more difficult shooting situations, such as when you’re walking. While you can use the camera to take photographs, it’s clear this one is all about video, so much so that it has neither a viewfinder nor a built-in flash, making it less than ideal for capturing stills.
The Canon EOS R50 V loads up on the vlogging-friendly features, of course. For instance, it gets two buttons you can press to start recording – one in the traditional shutter position and one in front of the camera for selfie-style framing, while coming with both vertical and horizontal tripod mounts, so you can set up in portrait orientation just as easily as with traditional landscape video. The onscreen menu automatically rotates based on the camera’s orientation, too. Other creator-focused features include a camera zoom lever for compatible Power Zoom lenses, a three-mic array with built-in noise reduction, and a new dial that offers seven video-focused modes.
There’s a dedicated button that lets you instantly switch to livestreaming mode, with four different modes supported, namely UVC/UAC, HDMI, Camera Connect, and Live Switcher Mobile for multi-camera setups (it supports up to three). Other features include a fully-articulating 3.0-inch display, the outfit’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system, a new color filter mode with 14 different options, a single UHS-II card slot, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a nice selection of ports for hooking up various accessories.
The Canon EOS R50 V comes out end of April, priced starting at $649.99.
