Truth be told, we’re actually surprised Hollywood hasn’t done a Back to the Future reboot yet. It’s easily one of the most enduring films of all time, with fans buying up new merch from the franchise even to this day, whether it be die-cast DeLorean slot cars, Marty McFly’s self-lacing sneakers, or the floating hoverboard that, for some reason, mankind still hasn’t been able to recreate to this day. This time around, BttF fans can rock a DeLorean-themed version of Marty McFly’s calculator watch in the form of the Casio CA500WEBF-1A.
A dressier version of the plastic calculator watch from the film, the timepiece brings the same geeky aesthetic as the original, albeit with the plastic swapped out in favor of metal parts. It’s a good idea, of course, considering most fans of the film are probably a lot older by now and would prefer much dressier accessories than the all-plastic geek watches of old.
The Casio CA500WEBF-1A is a modified version of the CA-500, which is a later version of the CA-53W used in the movie. It retains the same general layout as the original watch, with a digital display on top and a four rows of calculator buttons underneath it. The big change, of course, is replacing the plastic case and strap with polished stainless steel, giving the classic design a far dressier appeal.
Aside from that, they also infused the exterior with design details directly lifted off the DeLorean time machine’s overall aesthetic. The top of the watch, for instance, sports an OUTATIME label to make sure you know it’s a Back to the Future-themed timepiece (to the unfamiliar, it’s the DeLorean’s license plate), while the color scheme for the labels right next to the buttons are lifted straight off the circuit wiring from the time machine. The case back, on the other hand, gets a flux capacitor engraving, while the buckle on the band sports a Back to the Future logo.
The Casio CA500WEBF-1A gets all the usual digital timekeeping functions, including dual time, 12/24-hour format,1/100-second stopwatch, full auto-calendar, daily alarm, and hourly time alerts. Instead of accessing the functions on a side button, you use the calculator buttons for them, with full labels on each, so you know exactly which ones to press for alarms, lap resets, and so on. There doesn’t seem to be any backlighting for this one, so you’ll need some amount of ambient light to actually check the time. The calculator seems to be pretty basic, allowing you to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with none of the fancier scientific functions of more advanced calculators.
The watch case measures 43.2 x 34.4 x 8.2 mm, so it should take up a big chunk of your wrist. Other features include water resistance (no specs on the rating, though), a resin glass cover, a self-adjusting stainless steel band (no need to remove links), and an approximate battery life of five years on a fresh coin cell battery. It comes in a packaging styled to look like a VHS copy of the movie.
The Casio CA500WEBF-1A is available now, priced at $120.
