Fraimic E-Ink Picture Frame Lets You Use ChatGPT to Create Images on the Fly

Just like with e-readers, E-Ink screens have long made for a great choice in framed displays, since they offer excellent detail while using up very little power. They’re especially better now with the current improvements in colored epaper panels. The Fraimic takes full advantage of modern E-Ink technology, while also integrating image generation tech, so you can use AI to whip up original image displays on the fly.

A digital picture frame, you can use it to showcase full-color images, whether it be paintings, posters, photos, or anything else. You can upload those images directly to the frame using the companion web app similar to other digital picture frames, although you also get the option of using generative AI by simply saying what you want displayed on the frame.

The Fraimic is a digital picture frame equipped with a color E-Ink display, allowing it to show off full-color images without the steady refresh rate that traditional LCD panels require. This allows it to use up very little power, especially since it uses no front lighting or backlighting, with the outfit claiming a full charge of the 10,000 mAh battery can keep it running for up to five years before requiring a recharge. According to the outfit, the device is designed to reflect ambient light naturally similar to traditional picture frames, giving it the look and feel of old-school analog media, with none of the light emissions and screen glare you get from LCD displays.

It comes with built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to connect to it using any PC, phone, or tablet on the network, as well as a built-in mic that you can use to describe any generative image you want displayed on the frame. To use the mic, you simply tap anywhere on the frame to activate it and give it your instructions. The app, by the way, comes with a style selector for the AI, so you get added control to the kind of images the generative AI will produce.

The Fraimic houses the E-Ink display in a wooden photo frame with a matte black finish, making it a proper framed display that’s perfect for showing off your favorite visual images. It comes in two sizes, namely standard and large. Standard combines a 13.3-inch Spectra 6 E-Ink panel with a frame measuring 14 x 18 inches, while Large combines a 31.5-inch Spectra 6 panel with a frame that measures 24 x 36 inches. Both frame sizes are designed for mounting up a wall. According to the outfit, they plan to introduce other sizes down the line, too.

While the feature set sticks to the basics for now (upload or generate images), they do plan to add more down the line. Specifically, they plan to offer a Movie Mode that displays the movie poster of whatever film you’re watching on the big screen TV, a Music Mode that displays album art for any music you have playing on the Wi-Fi speakers, curated galleries, multi-room artwork management, and artist subscriptions (if you want a steady rotation of artwork from specific artists).

A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for the Fraimic. You can reserve a unit for pledges starting at $299.
