Nanoleaf has long made lightstrips for gaming TVs that mirror the colors appearing onscreen, creating a veritable light show that extend what’s onscreen around the big screen TV’s periphery. In the past, their solutions consisted of systems that relied on cameras and control boxes, which makes sense for TVs that get their input from various sources. With the Nanoleaf PC Screen Mirror Lightstrip, though, the outfit ditches the extra hardware by plugging straight to the computer.
That’s right, Nanoleaf streamlines their newest screen-extending lightstrip by simply connecting it directly to the user’s computer. This makes ideal for desktop PC use, as it minimizes visible clutter while also being more affordably-priced, albeit with the downside of not being usable for traditional TV setups that aren’t hooked up to a computer.
The Nanoleaf PC Screen Mirror Lightstrip is equipped with 75 color-changing LEDs spread out across a 98-inch long strip. The strip attaches to the back of your gaming monitor using an adhesive backing, with the length being optimized to cover the entire periphery of monitors up to 32 inches. The strip is trimmable if you want to install it on a smaller monitor, by the way, although there seems to be no longer option for larger monitors for now. They also don’t say whether you can sync two lightstrips if you want to install on a bigger display.
It comes with a USB-C cable that you can hook up directly to a computer, which the Nanoleaf Desktop App (Mac and Windows) uses to control the behavior of the LEDs. With that said, it requires the app to be running on the PC the entire time, since it’s what detects the display on the desktop and feeds the accompanying instructions to the lightstrip. It uses RGBIC LEDs, by the way, each with 16 million colors and a 25,000-hour lifespan rating.
