TeamGroup T-Create Expert P35S Has a Self-Destruct Mechanism You Can Trigger Anytime

Some people fill their external SSDs with movies, photos, and all sorts of media. Others use their drives to carry more sensitive files. The TeamGroup T-Create Expert P35S is for those who carry data so sensitive they cannot be allowed to get into other people’s hands.

Designed for total information security, the computing accessory doesn’t just encrypt your data to keep it out of unwanted eyes, it integrates a self-destruct mechanism that claims to perform a “truly irreversible data wipe.” Even better, you can easily trigger the self-destruct using the integrated sliding switch, making it a perfect external drive for corporate spies, government spooks, and all sorts of other shady characters. Yes, even you.

The TeamGroup T-Create Expert P35S looks like any SSD drive, so it’s reasonably compact and slim, making it easy to slip in most any pocket. It works like most standard SSD drives, too, offering USB 3.2 Gen 2 transfer speeds of 1,000 MBps, so copying files to and from the drive should go just as fast. The drive is available in four different capacities, namely 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, so you can get the exact size your individual needs require, whether you’re using it for large troves of government data on alien lifeforms, military secrets, or corporate strategies.

Of course, what sets this drive apart is the self-destruct mechanism integrated into it. This is activated using a sliding switch out front that make it easy to commence the action whenever you deem that a complete data wipe is completely necessary. Activating requires a two-step process, each one requiring a bit of force, to help avoid accidental presses, by the way, so you don’t have to worry about unwittingly deleting all your data. To activate, you start by sliding the switch to reveal a red background, which serves as a warning sign. After that, you need to push again to slide it fully, which will then activate the self-destruct sequence.

The TeamGroup T-Create Expert P35S won’t automatically destroy the data if you simply slide the switch completely while you’re in the middle of the street, by the way. Instead, it needs additional power. As such, the entire self-destruction sequence will only complete once the drive is plugged into a compatible machine (Windows or Mac). That means, if you get caught with the drive in your pocket during an espionage mission, you won’t be able to simply destroy it on the fly. Unless, of course, you have a small computer to plug it into, which isn’t hard with the existence of Windows gaming handhelds these days.

According to the outfit, it performs a hardware-level data destruction mechanism. We’re not exactly sure what that entails, but the outfit claims it will irreversibly erase all data and render the entire device inoperable, effectively destroying it, along with all the files it holds, in the process. As such, they don’t recommend it for general consumers, instead reminding everyone it’s solely intended for those with very particular security needs.

No pricing is listed yet for the TeamGroup T-Create Expert P35S. We imagine that self-destruct feature will command a bit of a premium, though, so expect a loftier price tag than your typical external SSD.
