XPPen has made a name for itself with their roster of drawing tablets and pen displays, which they’ve then leveraged to branch off into somewhat related devices, like their Android drawing tablet. This time around, the outfit is releasing a full-fledged note-taking device with the XPPen Magic Note Pad.
No, it’s not an E-Ink device like most note-taking tablets. Instead, it uses an LCD panel that, the outfit claims, can deliver a paper-like visual experience without the ghosting and slow refresh rate found on E-Ink panels.
The XPPen Magic Note Pad is a 10.9-inch tablet is calling their display technology X-Paper, an LCD panel that’s designed to recreate the experience of reading and writing on paper. It has a dedicated X-Paper button that allows you to switch the screen’s color mode to one of three settings. There’s the Nature Color mode, which presents the original colors in a vivid yet delicate manner, as well as a Light Color mode that switches to low saturation colors to minimize eye fatigue. Lastly, there’s the Ink Paper mode, which switches to a paper-like black-and-white display that resembles printed reading materials.
It has a display resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, which should be plenty sharp for a 10.9-inch screen, along with a 90Hz refresh rate, 400 nits of brightness, and 95 percent of coverage of the sRGB color space. The display boasts AG nano-etching that supposedly reduces reflection and glare, too, which serves to reinforce the paper-like appearance. According to the outfit, the display is also TÜV SÜD-certified for low blue light and a paper-like appearance, so it won’t be as harsh as reading and writing on a traditional smartphone or tablet.
The XPPen Magic Note Pad ships with a pen stylus called the X3 Pro Pencil 2, which is designed to magnetically snap on a slot along the bezel, so you can keep it with the tablet at all times. The stylus comes with 16,384 pressure levels (as opposed to the 4,096 found in other stylus pens) to ensure precise recording of every stroke, as well as a soft pen nib that mimics the feel of a gel pen for a pleasant writing experience and built-in shortcut keys for easy access to onscreen actions right from the pen.
It comes preloaded with the custom XPPen Note app, which was co-developed with Jnote to give users professional-grade note-taking functionality right off the bat. The device runs Android 14, so it gets access to the full breadth of apps available from the Play Store, allowing you to use it like any Android tablet. That means, you can use your note-taking device to not just read books and jot down notes, but to watch movies, play games, and do all sorts of stuff you’d otherwise do on a traditional tablet. Other features include 128GB of onboard storage, an 8,000 mAh battery, a 13-megapixel front camera, dual speakers, and dual mics. There’s no word of an SD card slot, though, so it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to expand that storage that easily.
