Insta360 unveiled their flagship gimbal camera earlier this year in the form of the Luna Ultra, a dual-lens device with every bell and whistle you can ask for. It’s a solid competitor to DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4, especially in the US where the outfit’s products are still barred. However, bundling all those premium features means it comes at a steep price, which probably isn’t to everyone’s liking. If you want something similarly premium, but just a little more affordable, you might want to check out the Insta360 Luna Pro.
As you can tell, they both share the Luna branding. That’s because it’s, basically, a single-lens version of that handheld gimbal, albeit with a few new tricks up its sleeve that might make it even more interesting for some users.
The Insta360 Luna Pro is equipped with a 50-megapixel one-inch CMOS sensor and a Leica-branded 20mm-equivalent f/1.8 lens, so its very similar to the Ultra, sans the additional telephoto lens. As usual, there’s a three-axis mechanical gimbal providing physical stabilization, ensuring you can capture jitter-free videos even when you’re on the move. The device can shoot in both landscape and portrait orientation, capturing 8K footage up to 30 fps, 4K footage up to 120 fps, and 1080p up to 240 fps in the former. For vertical video, it can do 4K at 30 fps, so you be able to shoot ultra-detailed phone-friendly videos for your social media platforms.
Like the Ultra, it has a 2.0-inch OLED screen that can be oriented horizontally or vertically to match the aspect ratio you’re shooting at. The display has a resolution of 318 x 564 pixels, 1,000 nits of brightness, and a 60Hz refresh rate. More importantly, it’s detachable, so you can set the camera down somewhere while monitoring the framing remotely up to 20 meters away, making it extremely useful for solo creators doing their own camerawork. The OLED, by the way, has a built-in microphone, too, so you can capture your audio narration even when shooting in this mode.
The Insta360 Luna Pro is powered by the outfit’s dual AI chip, which enables the camera’s excellent low-light performance and auto-tracking features. According to the outfit, it can accurately track both single and group subjects, automatically following them using the motorized gimbal. It has 47GB of usable storage, so you can record videos to the onboard memory right off the bat, although there’s also an SD card slot that supports memory cards up to 2TB.
It comes with two battery modules: 1,550mAh on the camera and 210 mAh on the detachable screen. According to the outfit, it can record up to four hours of footage in 1080p, so you will probably get an hour or so at most when shooting in 8K. It does offer fast-charging, though, filling up to 80 percent in around 23 minutes. Other features include a total of four microphones (three on the camera, one on the screen), Dolby Vision HDR support, I-Log 10-Bit support, and built-in Leica color profiles, along with other cinmeatic profiles.
