Crazy Creek has been making their legless camp chairs for nearly four decades now, providing seating comfort in the outdoors without the heft or weight of traditional folding chairs. And we’ve seen them come up with some creative ways to incorporate that basic design into more specialized functions, such as this legless chair for recreational watercrafts, such as paddleboards and rafts. That’s exactly what they’re doing with the Crazy Creek Boat Chair.
Sadly, it’s not a chair shaped like a boat, which would have been quite fun. Instead, it’s a legless camp chair that’s designed to pull double duty as a personal floatation device. That means, you can use it to add cushioned seating to the plastic chair on your kayak, while also serving as your life-saving flotation device when your boat capsizes. Very handy.

The Crazy Creek Boat Chair looks very much like the rest of the outfit’s legless camp chair. You get a thick cushioned seat attached to a slimmer cushioned back rest that can fold into each other and secure using the integrated buckle straps, making it easy to collapse for portability. To use as a chair, you just unfold it and lock in the L-shape by securing the buckle straps on the sides, allowing you to plop down on a cushioned seat with a stiff surface behind it that you can comfortably lean your back on. You can even loosen or tighten the straps to adjust the reclining angle. It looks about as comfortable as any Crazy Creek legless chair, so if you like those things, you’ll probably enjoy sitting in this one as well.

Of course, what makes it unique is the fact that it’s also designed to serve as a Type IV throwable personal floatation device that you can use to keep from drowning when something untoward happens in the water. According to the outfit, it meets all federal requirements for US Coast Guard approval when it comes to safety floatation devices for boats 16 feet or longer. It measures 16.25 x 16.75 x 2.5 inches when folded, by the way, so it’s sized to easily fit into most boat’s storage compartments for easy access during emergencies. You don’t need to unfold it to use as a floatation device, by the way, so you just throw it in the water folded and it’s good to go.

The Crazy Creek Boat Chair has a thicker seat than most other legless chairs we’ve seen from the outfit. According to the product page, that’s because the seat is the component that actually enables it to float. No details are available on what the seat cushion is actually made of, but since it floats, it’s probably some kind of closed-cell foam such as PE or PVC. Since it’s meant to be used in and around the water, the outer is quick-drying fabric that, the outfit claims, is built to withstand sun, water, and sea conditions, while coming with a high-tenacity nylon hinge that’s been engineered for long-lasting durability, whether you use it on boats, rocky ground, sand, or anywhere else. The whole thing weighs just 2.5 pounds.
The Crazy Creek Boat Chair is available now, priced at $119.95.
