Packfire Brings Fold-Flat Portability to Smokeless Fire Pits

Smokeless fire pits have changed the game for many patios and backyards, allowing folks to enjoy a toasty fire without the accompanying smoke. It’s just so much more pleasant. And while some of these smokeless designs are compact enough to put in the boot of the car for use on the go, they’re just not proper portable and packable fire pits. The Packfire changes that.

Like other smokeless fire pits, it’s designed to burn wood efficiently, pushing any smoke it produces back inside the main chamber for a really thorough burn. Unlike them, it’s designed to fold flat, allowing it to be carried on a backpack for easily taking to campsites, tailgates, and everywhere else.

The Packfire is a packable smokeless fire pit that consists of three parts: a detachable three-legged base, a segmented body, and a detachable rim. When collapsing, you take off the rim, fold up the body, and fold up the legs, creating three flat modules designed to store in the included backpack, making it easy to not just transport in your car, but even carry on the go when you’re on foot. With everything packed up, the whole thing measures just 25 x 17.3 x 8 inches (height x width x depth) and weighs 35 pounds, making it viable for taking along even when you’re hiking up a short trail.

When assembled, the fire pit measures 22.5 x 15 inches (height x diameter), so it’s a bit smaller than your typical backyard fare. Despite that, it’s large enough to accommodate logs up to 16 inches long, allowing you to use larger pieces of wood for fuel. it has elevated legs, so you won’t be doing any damage the ground underneath, although it doesn’t seem to include a deflector, which has proven necessary among the current crop of smokeless fire pits if you want to radiate the heat evenly around the surrounding area.

The Packfire uses a similar design to many smokeless fire pits, allowing air to come through the bottom section of the sidewalls, which travels up the gap between the outer and inner walls. This heated hair is then expelled through holes at the upper inner walls, funneling any rising smoke back into the flames for a clean burn. From what we can tell, this is exactly the same as what products like the Solo Stove does, so it should be just as effective at producing a smokeless experience. The legs, by the way, include a concave pan on top, which collects any ash produced for easy cleanup. When you want to dump the ash, simply press the release button on the body to lift the walls up and isolate the legs.

Construction is a mix of aluminum and stainless steel for the main body, with the entire lower section cut in stainless steel. The backpack, by the way, comes with a built-in kickstand, so you can stand it all on its own while you’re packing or unpacking, making it very easy to use on the go.

A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for the Packfire. You can reserve a unit for pledges starting at $319.
