ReMarkable has spent the last half-decade building out its more premium product line of note-taking tablets, with the last grayscale model, the ReMarkable 2, coming out way back in 2020. If you’ve been waiting for an updated version of their more affordable design, then you’ll be happy to hear about the ReMarkable Paper Pure.
Just like the outfit’s first two digital notepads, the device is fitted with a grayscale E-Ink display, instead of the color panels their more premium models have. It also gets the same textured finish on the screen as their previous releases, allowing it to recreate the feel of writing with pen-and-paper as closely as possible.
The ReMarkable Paper Pure has a 10.3-inch e-paper display that’s a modified version of the E-Ink Carta 1300 with a Gorilla Glass 3 panel on top. It has a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 and 226 PPI, so text and images should look sharp and detailed, along with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 20 percent more contrast than the last gen, and a brighter appearance. Inside, it has a faster 1.7GHz dual-core Cortex-A55 processor, 2GB of DDR4 RAM (up from 1GB on the ReMarkable 2), and 32GB of internal storage (up from 8GB), so it’s get upgraded hardware compared to the 2020 model. According to early reviews, everything feels faster compared to the older model, too, so it could be a nice upgrade if you’ve been thinking of retiring the six-year old e-paper notepad.
It comes with a battery-powered stylus called the Marker, which magnetically snaps to the side of the tablet whenever it’s not in use. Even better, it automatically charges the whole time it’s attached, so as long as you keep it there when not using the stylus, you never have to think about ever charging it. According to the outfit, the distance between the outer surface (the part the stylus touches) and the actual display panel has now been shrunk to 0.8mm, so it should deliver better latency than the last grayscale model.
The ReMarkable Paper Pure runs the latest version of the outfit’s reMarkable OS, a custom Linux system optimized for digital paper displays. As with the rest of the outfit’s digital notepads, you can create different types of notebooks and fill each one with different page templates, so you can combine ruled pages, music sheets, and sketch pads in one bundle. You can organize those notebooks using folders and tags. It can also open PDF and EPUB files, which you can write on top of using the stylus, allowing you to jot down any notes or annotations. All your writing are editable, by the way, so you can resize, cut, paste, move, rotate and so on, while also offering an option to convert your handwriting to digital text. Other software features include screen mirroring (great for presenting on a larger display), cloud storage integration, and exporting to different file formats.
It runs on a 3,820mAh battery, by the way, which should last you anywhere from a few days to a few weeks between charges, depending on usage. Other details include dual-band Wi-Fi, a USB-C port, auto-wake and auto-sleep function, and built-in data encryption. Sadly, there’s no front lighting, so you’ll need external illumination in order to use it every time.
