Shark makes good vacuums. Whether it’s robo-vacs or more conventional cleaning machines, their models consistently rank up there among the best in the market. The Shark PowerDetect Transformer is their lates home vacuum.
No, it’s not a marketing tie-in with the Transformers, although that would have been amazing, Instead, it’s a vacuum that can take on three different form factors, allowing you to use it as a compact handheld vacuum, a slim-profile stick vacuum, or a more conventional bulky upright vac. That’s right, a single vacuum for cleaning everything with just a little fiddling to go from one mode to the other.

The Shark PowerDetect Transformer doesn’t use the same hose-and-wand design as traditional upright vacuums, since the hose can be a hindrance to its ability to morph into a different form factor. That means, you won’t have to deal with those dangling hoses that do get in the way every now and then. In upright mode, it has a large detachable dust compartment near the bottom, allowing you to clean large areas without having to empty the tank in the middle of it. Remove that large compartment and it turns into a stick vacuum that can clean under the couch and around the ceiling, with all the dust collecting in the smaller compartment near the top. To turn it into a handheld model, simply remove the long pole at the bottom, plug in the handheld attachment in its place, and you’re set, ready to clean debris off the couch, the closet, and other tight spaces. Once you reattach the long pole and the large dust tank, you can easily empty the smaller tank into it with one click of a button.

It comes with the outfit’s smart detection systems that enable it to clean more efficiently. For instance, it recognizes whether you’re moving forward or backward, then directs the suction towards that same direction. It also detects the floor type you’re cleaning, then adjusts the speed of the dual brush roll’s movement to maximize cleaning power. Sensors on the side allow it to recognize when you’re cleaning near edges and corners (areas between the floor and ceiling), which prompts the vacuum to increase its suction power to pull in more debris. It also has UV LEDs that’s supposed to let people see dust and dirt that the human eye otherwise wouldn’t notice, so you can see just how clean (or dirty) your floor actually is.

The Shark PowerDetect Transformer has specially-designed brush rolls that can capture hair without trapping it, ensuring the hair will go straight to the dust tank instead of bunching up on the brush like it often does on most vacuums. According to the outfit, it can also tackle pet hair stuck on upholstery, drapes, and everywhere else, while coming with a 30-foot cord (yes, it’s corded), so you can use it to clean the car in the driveway (heck, it can probably even reach outside if you’re parked in the street). It weighs 17.7 pounds in full upright mode.
The Shark PowerDetect Transformer is available now, priced at $529.99.
